Super 8 cross media study

Cross media: Super 8

How is Super 8 promoted through?
Print:
Through print mostly the film is reviewed to give the audience an inside detail inside Super 8, and whether the audience should spend their money to go watch the film. There is a brief paragraph about the film, and then the film is explained in more detail which is mostly for the people who don’t plan on watching the film. The review would also include information about the directors and producers, and their concept to the film. In this case the director is J.J. Abrams, and the producers the world’s best Steven Spielberg.  It’s important for the audience to know who the directors are so they can research on past project to see if they have been successful.

Broadcasting:
The full trailer is shown theatrical for the full 2 minutes amount - so this attracts the cinema visitors to watch the film next time. On the TV spot the trailers around 30 seconds, so the most important scenes are shown. As millions of people watch Television around the world this is the best way to promote their film. In this case it would be perfect for the film to be promoted on the film channel e.g. Sky movies as there movie watchers. As super 8 is not out on DVD yet , people can pre-order and it has been advertised on TV.
E-media
Also the trailer is on youtube, so the trailer can be viewed anywhere at anytime by just having internet or wi-fi. Youtube is used all over the world and is one of the most viewed website in the world. People who see Super 8 on television would probably watch it on the internet to verify how good the film really is.
Films are promoted also through varies news and showbiz websites which people could look thought for example- This is E news the biggest showbiz news in America and it’s promoting the film : http://uk.eonline.com/news/do_these_new_super_8_photos_give_any/244837.
The actors, or director could have their own social networking website which could be promoted on their which may of their fans would see. Social network is a great for the fans to receive quick and fast information about the film. Especially for the teenage viewers as their ones which are the main audience and use the internet a lot. Twitter:http://twitter.com/#!/super8movie, Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/Super8Movie , Twitter of the director J.J Abrams : http://twitter.com/#!/JJ__Abrams
Also on varies website on the side on the toolbar there's going to be some advertisements. For example if someone on a movie website or a showbiz news site , there could be a toolbar on the side promoting the film.
Now look at each platform individually:

Mark Kermode review the week's new films every Friday from 2pm on BBC Radio 5 live , it can also be downloaded on podcast http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/markkermode/2011/08/super_8.html
Think about how that platform uses genre codes
Radio – The film would be promoted on talk shows, which they have interviews and review the film - http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/markkermode/2011/08/super_8.html
Print – The newspapers that would promote Super 8 would be tabloid , as they review films while at the same time promoting it - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/reviews/article-2022617/Super-8-review-This-charming-tale-time-great-family-films.html
Now think of how Super 8 is being promoted across the 3 platforms
Similarity
The similarity of all these 3 platforms is that end of the day, they are promoting the film – radio and television tend to do this more. Radio talk shows and blogs are more reviewing and explain the positives and negatives.

Difference
The difference between the different platforms is that they target different audiences, and some are better at targeting them. For movie lovers the best platform to promote would be through the television, as people who like movies tend to watch TV a lot. Radio is better at promoting to adults who travel in their cars to go work, and also the elderly who enjoy listening to radio rather than TV. Radio and television tend to do more interviews and promote the film to the public to watch. While blogs and reviews are more critical and analyse the film so the public use their money wisely.
How is Super 8 promoted to its target audience(s) through? Who are there target audience?
Print
For print there are different target audience as newspaper like tabloid are bought by middle class people. This means there are reviews about the film as it would give the middle class people a chance to see if there money is worth to watch it. On the other hand magazines tend to promote the films more as they are a showbiz print which they have to show the audience the latest hollywood action.

Broadcasting is Television, radio or DVD as most of the audience it is statistically, there are 26 million people who own a television and TV license and many people go to the cinema for example 31 million people so most people find out about new films through the TV from trailers to talk shows and Super 8 have done this through to ways by having many different country channels viewing the interview which was shown on BBC and Hit list an Australian show this brings out different types of ethnicity to watch the film and this is what will help the film go global which is globalisation.

How are characters/stars in the film represented in:

Print

In the print the character and directors are represented as products as they mostly describe and introduce the characters.

Film 8 review

Review
JJ Abrams gets together with his idol Steven Spielberg and makes a film that is part homage, part franchise. It's an affectionate tribute to Spielberg classics such as Close Encounters and ET, but it is also itself, as the poster announces, a Steven Spielberg movie: Spielberg produces. So it's part homage, part franchise operation. Super 8 is like a comic horror film which is about a group of kids ia small industrial town in Ohio in 1979, who are obsessed teenagers planning to make a zombie horror picture with a Super 8 camera to enter a statewide competition. One of the teens Joe the special makeup expert, has been left to be raised by his father, the local deputy sheriff to the lose of his mother. Him and his school mates plus his high school crush decide to go filming after midnight , they take the car to a rail line. The confident Charlie is about to make his directorial debut with the help of his four companions and a pretty 15-year-old classmate, Alice , from the wrong side of the tracks, recruited to play the romantic lead. This movie-within-the movie concerns a horde of the undead roaming the countryside. Charlie and his crew are engaged in a night shoot beside a  railway line and – to gain the film's "production values" . This includes the passing train while the crush Alice and the other actor do their acting scenes. What follows after is film's most greatest rail accidents to be shown on screen; this happens by the students science teacher directly crashing into the train. The explosion caused definitively had Steven Spielberg written all over it , he produced Transformers: revenge of the fallen which had the same mind blowing explosions in there. It was a special air force train and the teacher was seeking to wreck it because there was something vital aboard, UFO , alien. With the train being wrecked; which indeed meant a beast was released into this small town. People already found it shocking such huge explosion happened near their town. The community descends into chaos as the soldiers crack down. Strange abductions occur. An evacuation is ordered. Rumor spreads that it's all the work of the Soviet Union. Joe's policeman dad attempts to retain order while at the same time investigating and having doubts about the the air force and what there motives in the city are. After Alice gets taken by the alien the group of kids decide to go after her , to try safe her. Joe finds a tunnel where he believes the UFO to be keeping all the lost properties and this is where Alice was being kept. They distract it with fireworks which lead them to safe it , after the alien chases them to a dead end. Joe talks to the alien with sympathy about how it should leave to it's planet , the Extra-Terrestrial understood him and spares all their life's. This is a homage to E.T as the Elliot had a great connection with ET which allowed them to be great friends.

The film has an great suspension throughout the movie as the alien is not shown but it's corruption that it does throughout the city is displayed. This makes all the viewers wonder how and what kind of creature would be doing these kind of things. It's also comic while at the same time a little scary which is great for teenagers and young adults to watch as they can watch it confidently. Some parts will have them jumping but most scenes are intriguing to watch.
Still image lighting analysis

Smallville : Kissing scene

In this kissing scene there is high key lighting to fully show the lovers passion towards each other when kissing; also the room is bright with white light shinning over them. This could represent that their love is pure and there's no problems or trouble involved. There's also top lighting being shined on them, this shows that the spotlight is on both of them and that this moment is a special moment of the episode. The misc en scene creates a casual love between those two; as they look like two casual people who work at the same place who have falling for each other.

Fast & Furious Movie CLIP - 20% Angel, 80 % devil

At the start of the scene Terredo confront a mysterious which he knows is the car which was used to kill his girlfriend. So there was low key lighting used when the camera was shot towards the car to create that mystery behind the car. Also he approaches the car face to face , with very low key lighting , where only the shapes of the car and man can be seen. This represents that terredo has angre and rare inside him and that the car is the key to solve his revenge. Then there's a shot with his emotion, which the viewers want to see so there a top lighting which shows the whole of his face.
